Bioenergy Project Busia – Western Kenya

Bioenergy Project Busia – Western Kenya
  • Status In Progress
  • Partners USAID, Spanner

REGID International is developing a bioenergy project in Matayos Village (Busia, Western Kenya) through the implementation of a 20 Kw village scale Gliricidia* fueled power plant. This will result in a standard playbook as a reference knowledge base showcasing how these systems can be practicalized in Sub Saharan Africa. REGID International, under the guidance of senior advisory from agronomy of Gliricidia extension services, Biomass systems engineering and Business development, has completed:

  1. Pre-qualification study;
  2. Financial model;
  3. The initiation of the process of obtaining permits through acquisition of a valid license;
  4. The negotiation of biomass supply agreements;
  5. Sensitivities on the impact of changes in interest rates and fuel prices.

This project will be led by REGID International as a local developer and supported by USAID technical and Spanner with technology and experience through their technology and project design expertise.

The next phase will involve a thorough feasibility analysis to validate the desktop review findings and complete the permit and contract process, off taker agreements and negotiations, validate the technology and complete an in-depth market assessment in completion of the design phase.

*Gliricidia: Gliricidia sepium is a medium-sized tree that grows 10–12 m (33–39 ft) high. The bark is smooth, and its color can range from a whitish gray to deep red-brown.
